SSN(Social Security Number／社会保障番号)とは？
SSNの歴史と実態

1936年にSSN（Social Security Number／社会保証番号）が、最初に導入された時、連邦政府はSSNの使用は社会保障制度にのみ限定すると公表しました。しかしながら、現在は、SSNはアメリカで最も頻繁に使用される記録番号となっています。1961年には、IRS（税務署）が、すべての課税目的のためにSSNを使用することを決定しました。SSNは、従業員ファイル、カルテ、健康保険アカウント、クレジットカードおよび銀行口座、大学身分証明書等、その他の多くの目的に使用されています。実際、税務申告上の子供の扶養控除適用の為には、1歳の子供でもSSNの取得が必要です。また、被雇用の際、SSNが必要です。雇用契約の前に、一般市民ばかりでなく、長期滞在者や、多くの場合、短期滞在ビザによる居住者でさえ、SSNの取得を要求されます。
SSNはハイフンによって分離された3つのフィールドとして一般に書かれて、9桁の数字で構成されます。例）XXX-YY-ZZZ。最初の3桁は「地域番号」、真ん中の2桁は「グループナンバー」、最終お4桁は「通し番号」です。

When Social Security numbers were first issued in 1936, the federal government assured the public that use of the numbers would be limited to Social Security programs. Today, however, the Social Security number (SSN) is the most frequently used recordkeeping number in the United States. In 1961 the IRS decided to use the Social Security number for all tax purposes. SSNs are used for employee files, medical records, health insurance accounts, credit and banking accounts, university ID cards, and many other purposes. In fact, the Social Security number is now required for dependents over one year of age if the parents claim the child for tax purposes. In the USA a Social Security Number is required to work. In general before commencing employment, all Citizens, Permanent Residents and in many instances residents on specific temporary visas are required to obtain a Social Security Number. A Social Security Number (SSN) consists of nine digits, commonly written as three fields separated by hyphens: XXX-YY-ZZZ. The first three-digits are called the "area number". The middle, two-digits are called the "group number". The final, four-digits are called the "serial number".
